Planetary Permutations
“When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” goes the old proverb. The Chinese version translates as “Enter a village, follow the customs.” For the planets in astrology, the equivalent motto would be something like “When in Libra, act through Libran themes.”
The planets are always themselves and always do what they do, but they don’t always do it in the same style. As each planet transits through the Zodiac, it adapts its manner and focus to the ways of whatever sign it temporarily occupies. Whenever a planet changes signs, we might envision a figure reaching into its wardrobe and changing into a different outfit that’s appropriate to its new field of action.
While a planet occupies a sign, we may observe evidence of its influence in that field. There we may also encounter, or act personally as, agents of that planet. We always have a choice to channel or respond to the planet’s influence wisely or foolishly — that’s up to us.
In this series, we’ll look into each planet’s ‘wardrobe’ to see the style it adopts for each of its 12 regular Zodiacal visits.
What Mercury Does
Mercury is a mental influence of the type associated with the logical left brain. Mercury rules both Gemini (a masculine sign in which he actively acquires and disseminates knowledge) and Virgo (a feminine sign in which he applies his knowledge to practical tasks).
Mercury is the planetary agent of curiosity and connections, who observes in detail the objects, interactions and events in the world around him in order to learn how things work and find clever ways of working with them. While Mercury’s observations are objective, he tends to focus on them according to the style of the sign he occupies, so that he tends to notice and think about different things at different times. The current Mercury sign influences things like conversations, news, local visits and errands, and approaches to tasks and work.
Whatever his style, Mercury is always either gaining and imparting knowledge or putting his knowledge to work, with the intention of being useful. In most of the signs he’s logical and very well organized; in some he’s more relaxed. We need to take care not to allow his curiosity or distractability to annoy others, or to take us “into the weeds” of unimportant details that interfere with usefulness more than they serve it. We’re wise to keep in mind that some with ulterior motives choose to misuse their Mercurial cleverness.
Each of us was born with Mercury in a particular sign that belongs permanently to our personality. The current transits of Mercury don’t change that in any way, but they can temporarily influence our moods or our interactions with others. Some Mercury transits harmonize with our personal interests and ways of thinking, drawing out our own Mercurial traits. We may respond differently to Mercury transits that happen to clash with our personal thinking style.

Mercury in Transit (cycle is about 1 year = 1 month in each sign)
Mercury accompanies the Sun in his annual transit through the Zodiac, but not so closely as to always be in the same sign. Sometimes Mercury occupies the same sign as the Sun; sometimes he’s in one of the two adjacent signs.
Mercury transits can affect us either from within ourselves or from somewhere in our environment. Relatively brief and mild, the effects of Mercury transits are interesting to observe. Often they indicate no more than casual observations, but sometimes they coincide with some kind of helpful service given or received, a memorable encounter or message, or the discovery of a significant piece of information.
On a social level, we may find ourselves conversing or seeking information about a topic that’s associated with the current Mercury sign, or visiting an associated place. Work that we need to do or to have done may be somehow associated with the current Mercury sign.
I’ll suggest examples of some typical effects of Mercury in the style of each of the 12 signs; you can imagine variations on those themes and observe the ones that come your way.
Mercury in Aries: Spontaneous and Speedy
Rapid intuitive action characterize the Aries style. We tend to walk or drive in a fast beeline to wherever we want to go. The same goes for work style; we use the quickest method possible so as to get it done in a hurry. All the better if we’re trying out a new way that never occurred to us before.
If we pause long enough to communicate, we talk or write rapidly and to the point, maybe a bit bluntly. We may announce current news with enthusiasm, but we don’t want to waste time speculating about its implications. Often we’re trying something new and wouldn’t even know yet what to say about it.
Mercury in Taurus: Deliberate and Measured
The Taurus style is plant-like, organic, unwilling to be rushed and not even particularly eager to get around. With Mercury in Taurus, we tend to take errands at a leisurely pace, a step at a time, with occasional pauses to “smell the roses” along the way. It’s a likely time for shopping trips and strolls through parks. The Taurus way of working is similar, so that we don’t want to be hurried through tasks, but instead to execute them slowly and carefully, with a focus on superior quality.
In Taurus, Mercury tends to think literally, learn methodically, and communicate slowly and deliberately. We’d rather build on knowledge we already have than learn anything new. Though we’re unlikely to be very surprised by messages from Mercury in Taurus, we can expect them to be clear and easy to understand.
Mercury in Gemini: The Swift Messenger
Mercury functions most naturally in this sign of his rulership, circulating easily through his environment on various errands and visits, and performing a variety of small tasks like the clever jack of all trades that he is. We may accomplish a lot of the little items on our “to do” lists when Mercury is in Gemini.
Gemini brings out Mercurial curiosity and facility with language more than any other sign. Many of us temporarily become avid researchers or loquacious chatterboxes during this time. We may catch up on our writing or reading now, or enjoy many animated conversations on almost any topic.
Mercury in Cancer: The Way We Were and The Way We Feel
Mercury is as busy as usual when in Cancer, but tends to be less mobile and more domestic, attuned to feelings and comfort. While he’s there, we may find ourselves attending to little things needed or expected by our families, or puttering around with this and that at home. For one example of many possibilities, a focus on meals might have us researching recipes or on an errand to the market with a lengthy grocery list in hand.
In Cancer, Mercury tends to think about how to promote peace and a sense of security, reinforcing the general consensus rather than disturbing it. It’s a bad time for controversial topics, but a wonderful time for nostalgia and communication about emotional issues. When Mercury is in Cancer, the young get curious about old times, and the old can easily reminisce about them in an interesting manner. Expressions of feeling usually elicit responses of soothing sympathy.
Mercury in Leo: Outings and Eloquence
Like any planet in Leo, Mercury functions here playfully, and in hopes of making a positive impression. What sort of outing would be amusing and enjoyable? We may choose to go somewhere just for the fun of it, preferably in some vehicle that would draw attention and admiration. Our sharp mental focus on our fun makes this a great time for hobbies that call for research or painstaking precision. If we must work now, we try to do an honorable and praiseworthy job.
When Mercury is in Leo, we tend to treat communication, too, as a game or talent show. How eloquently can we speak or write? Whether we’re speaking from a stage or podium or writing a letter to a friend, we try to make an unforgettable masterpiece of our message. We like to express our pride in our hobbies or our children. We may find amusement in actual word games or spirited debates during this time.
Mercury in Virgo: The Troubleshooter
When Mercury goes places in Virgo, he has some practical purpose in mind. If he isn’t on his way to an appointment with a doctor, it’s likely that he’s either going to see some type of repair person or to purchase tools for some job. Otherwise, he’s probably too busy working on something to take time to go anywhere. This is a good time for solving annoying complex problems that we don’t usually feel like tackling. We can get things fixed properly and do some of our best practical work when Mercury is in Virgo.
In Virgo, the Mercurial mind is more perfectionistic and critical than usual. We tend to choose words with extra care, so that we say precisely what we mean and our communication is crystal clear. We’re hyperalert to flaws, an approach that lends itself perfectly to problem solving and practical communications about business. However, it’s the wrong approach to social communications, where technical talk and fault finding are more disturbing than helpful. It’s better to stick to practical tasks while Mercury is in Virgo, and to schedule social events for other times.
Mercury in Libra: The Diplomat
In Libra, Mercury ‘dresses’ for social occasions, which are often his reasons for going out. Picking up on his sociability, we tend to prefer the company of others rather than solitude now. We may often go out to visit or meet friends, and to enjoy social and cultural events in their company. We’re drawn to people and places that are pleasant, peaceful, and charming. This easygoing, cooperative transit favors those who work with and for other people.
Because Mercury in Libra focuses our thoughts on harmonious relationships, our communications are gentle, sweet, and diplomatic. When possible, we avoid or withdraw from unpleasantness, arguments, or discord of any kind. There may be times when direct confrontation or negotiation is necessary to effect peace, which is always the goal. When we’re not with others, this is a great time to phone or write letters to loved ones whose company we miss.
Mercury in Scorpio: “Boo!”
We’re probably not thinking of lighthearted whims when Mercury is in Scorpio. With or without good reason, there may be a scary sense of danger or loss in connection with our errands, and we’re likely to be going somewhere we’d rather not need to go. Maybe we have to deal with some kind of unpleasant business we’ve been dreading. Maybe we pass by the scene of a bloody accident, or through a spooky neighborhood. Maybe we’re on our way to attend a funeral. Or maybe we’re just going to a seasonal celebration that’s unnerving enough to remind us that we’re mortal. This transit favors funeral directors and others whose work has something to do with death, fateful deals, or deep digs of investigation.
No superficial small talk for Mercury in Scorpio — this intense mind craves release in deep conversation! If we’re going to communicate, it has to be with someone truly trustworthy who cares. Secrets may be revealed; plots may be plotted. It’s a time that favors consultations with psychiatrists and psychological catharsis. No one trustworthy to talk to? We might seek truth within through meditation, write about our feelings, or dig into a good mystery novel.
Mercury in Sagittarius: The Carefree Philosopher
The mind of Mercury in Sagittarius is on the big picture, new views of which we may now be curious to discover. Instead of the usual familiar local hangouts, we may go out in search of experiences with less familiar cultures at restaurants serving foreign food, schools teaching foreign languages, or lectures given by travelers eager to show and tell about their journeys. Alternatively, we may attend philosophy classes or frequent places of worship to develop our perspective through religion, or simply wander freely in search of a good laugh. Prompted by our intuition, we take our worries less seriously and find ways to cultivate a positive, happy outlook on life. This transit favors those whose work promotes expansion of consciousness and good humor, such as travel guides, spiritual teachers of all kinds, and comedians.
When in optimistic Sagittarius, detail-oriented Mercury simply doesn’t want to deal with “the devil in the details”. The Sagittarian mind tends to collapse pesky details into general categories and philosophize that if one method doesn’t solve a problem, he’ll find some other method that does. For that matter, in this style of thinking we tend to philosophize about everything, in terms of relevant stories or whatever spiritual language we understand best. Travelers tell how a situation is approached in a foreign culture, astrologers explain configurations of planets, religious people quote holy scriptures, etc., etc. We can’t analyze our way through every challenge, but in the big picture that doesn’t matter. We can think and speak freely, from a variety of perspectives. We can understand so much about the way life works, and then laugh with faith and confidence at the amazing mystery of the rest. In Sagittarius, Mercury’s carefree joking about the funny side of life can be hilarious.
Mercury in Capricorn: The Last Word
As in the other Earth signs, Mercury in responsible Capricorn circulates around his environment only when he must, his focus being on overall management. At this time, complications or barriers that can’t be handled by agents often arise, obliging an authority to go out and deal with details of a situation personally. The situation may not be quickly resolved, having evolved slowly over time. This is a period of careful, serious thought. Whether in business, personal, or family matters, authority is making important decisions that carry weight and imply consequences. Mercury in Capricorn favors the dutiful work of authorities upon whose judgment others depend.
In Capricorn, Mercury focuses thinking from a standpoint of authority. He may talk or write about history or interesting facts, but he doesn’t want to waste time with frivolous chatter or speculation. He tends to stick to serious communication about important established structures and influences known to impact them, as proven by previous experience. The language is plain and succinct. As Sergeant Joe Friday used to caution in police investigations on Dragnet, “just the facts, ma’am.” Useful information is presumed to conform to the established consensus knowledge base, and limited accordingly. Unless something is proven to have happened and is recognized by established authority, it didn’t happen.
Mercury in Aquarius: : The Iconoclast
In Aquarius, Mercury could care less about established consensus or the approval of authority. Those are based in the past, while Uranus-ruled Aquarius beckons from the future, with possibilities for new discovery and creativity. In this sign, Mercury tends to be curious or excited about some unorthodox experiment, and that’s where our thoughts go. Some of us work on revolutionary projects never considered possible before, while others respond to their ideas with nervousness and misgivings. Inventors and social reformers may come out of the woodwork. Errands may have peculiar purposes and/or involve the circumvention of old rules, sometimes in political movements. Such ideas are circulated and prepared for now with the hope of improvement over the ways of an obsolete past. Whether they will prove to be beneficial or detrimental, or will even be implemented at all, is as yet unknown. The time is favorable to those working with modern technology, things very ancient or futuristic, and creative thinkers in any field.
At this time change is in the air, and there is impatience with conventional ways of thinking. We may hear rumors of new technologies, ideas for social reform, or sudden changes of any kind. Authors of science fiction may have us visualizing life in startlingly different worlds. We can expect the unexpected even in personal communication now, because anyone’s words might surprise us. News could herald startling “done deals” or tentative ideas and unfounded rumors. It gives us opportunities to consider how we wish to respond to unexpected changes, or what we would or wouldn’t want to manifest in reality.
Mercury in Pisces: The Poet
Mercury in Pisces is uninterested in the past or future of the real world. If we see him on the street, likely he’s on his way to a theater, a concert, a masquerade, or somewhere else where he can immerse himself in fantasy. Or he might be enroute to a visit with someone whose life is limited to dreams, in a hospital or other confinement. If we don’t see him, he’s probably on some imaginary street in his own dreams. Mercurial analysis doesn’t work well in Pisces, making this a poor time for problem solving or any activity requiring accuracy or precision. On the other hand, the language of metaphors works beautifully in Pisces. This transit favors combinations of thought and imagination in such activities as reading or writing poetry and fantasy stories, divination involving images, or dream interpretation. It’s good for any of the arts, too — especially the ones involving use of the hands or the voice. For those whose work involves any such activities or people somehow excluded from society, this transit is very favorable.
In Pisces, Mercury communicates imaginatively. The facts we relate may lack accuracy, but OMG can we tell a colorful story! To take the best advantage of it, we set time and worries aside and simply let our minds wander. We may lose ourselves in our own dreams, or in movies, novels, or music. We may capture our visions in writing or express them through an art, where more meaning can be communicated than mere words could possibly express.
