Planetary Permutations
“When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” goes the old proverb. The Chinese version translates as “Enter a village, follow the customs.” For the planets in astrology, the equivalent motto would be something like “When in Libra, act through Libran themes.”
The planets are always themselves and always do what they do, but they don’t always do it in the same style. As each planet transits through the Zodiac, it adapts its manner and focus to the ways of whatever sign it temporarily occupies. Whenever a planet changes signs, we might envision a figure reaching into its wardrobe and changing into a different outfit that’s appropriate to its new field of action.
While a planet occupies a sign, we may observe evidence of its influence in that field. There we may also encounter, or act personally as, agents of that planet. We always have a choice to channel or respond to the planet’s influence wisely or foolishly — that’s up to us.
In this series, we’ll look into each planet’s ‘wardrobe’ to see the style it adopts for each of its 12 regular Zodiacal visits.
What Uranus Does
Future-oriented Uranus is impatient with the structures, systems, rules, and traditions that past-oriented Saturn upholds, and is quick to abandon them. Why cling to outdated old-school things when modern innovations are so much more convenient, efficient, and fun? And why defer to ‘authorities’ whose ‘slower’ thinking belongs to the past, when clever creative ideas that can benefit society might come to anyone with an open mind? Though the wisdom of Uranus is certainly questionable at times, its boldness and preference for common man’s free will over authority’s control is not.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” — proverb
The high-frequency energy of Uranus is that of creative thought. The method of Uranus is basically to take things apart and reassemble them differently. The original mental connections that flash in the Uranian mind transcend the limitations of conventional thinking. The result is proposals of new solutions to some of life’s challenges, as well as novelties in other areas of life. They appear on the scene suddenly and are received with both excitement and skepticism. Some of them are fads to be abandoned just as suddenly; others that seem more worthy last longer, always subject to further study and modification. As of 2025, the major Uranian trend to technologize and digitize everything has lasted for some time and increased efficiency exponentially, yet many wonder where it might go next, and question where and how far it should go.
Uranus represents the archetype of the Magician or Wizard who dazzles us with “magic”, demonstrating alternative approaches to our accustomed ways of doing things. We never know what Uranus might surprise us with next; possibilities range from the subtly peculiar to the outrageous and shocking.
Uranus sparks progress through:
Intuitive links with the Universal Mind
Understanding of life on a universal level
Original ideas and solutions to problems
Manifestation of freedom and individuality
Whereas Saturn favors conformity for predictability and ease of control, Uranus encourages individuality for unpredictability and the creative potential of chaos. The latter is found in the groups of assorted free-thinking people among whom Uranus initiates social change.
Caution is advisable with this powerful planet (as with all the outer planets). Sometimes Uranus’s sensational breakthroughs are amazing and wonderful; other times not so much. Newer is not always better, and can even be dangerous. The revolutionary influence of Uranus is more destructive than creative when it recklessly overthrows fundamental structures and rules that should remain in place for safety or other truly important reasons. Like all planetary energies, this one can be inadvertently or deliberately mishandled.
Uranus in Transit (cycle is about 84 years = 7 years in each sign)
The outer planets (beyond Saturn) move so slowly and stay in each sign for so long that to anticipate their influences, we need to look to history. Significant developments in the world at the time of a planet’s discovery give us clues to its effects. Further clues can be found in significant events during its past transits through each sign.1
Uranus was discovered in 1781, during the early years of the Industrial Revolution in Europe, when the economy and the social structure were undergoing drastic changes. A spate of new inventions had led to a shift from agriculture to industry, and many people who had been living and working on farms found themselves working in factories and adapting to the faster pace of city life.
Before the advent of affordable alarm clocks, industrial workers needed a reliable way to awaken in the morning early enough to be on time for work. They could hire a “knocker-up” or "knocker-upper” to come around early and startle them out of their sleep with a loud tap on their window. That’s pretty much how the Universe has set Uranus to work for us — it brings sudden, startling surprises that wake us up, snapping us out of our cultural trance and into a new perspective.
Creative Uranus would never keep old ‘clothes’ in a wardrobe; he simply conjures a new design on the spot for each Zodiacal occasion. All we can know in advance is the kind of magic Uranus will ‘dress himself’ for and his past record (for better and/or worse) in that sign. He won’t do the same things again, but he will do things that somehow ‘rhyme’ with his earlier actions there. Some things that began with Uranus’s long-ago transit through a sign may change radically or end altogether when he returns to that same place.
We’re sure to be surprised by Uranus’s quirky new magic in his current sign. Our response to it is always up to us.
Uranus in Aries:
Trailblazing Magic
This transit is characterized by a focus on individuality, independence, and pioneering spirit. People are especially fed up with the limiting effects of authority on their appearance and personal action (Who says I can’t wear X or do Y just because I’m a woman?). Uranus incites a strong need for spontaneous adventures and new experiences. Suddenly we have the courage, daring, initiative and resourcefulness to break away from the past and do things we’ve never done before, and do them in whatever way we choose. We may tend to be impulsive, abrupt, brusque, or radical in speech and action.
1927-1935: Uranus entered Aries in April 1927 and stayed until March 1935. It was a time when inventiveness and daring were prominent, reflecting the traits of both Uranus and Aries.
As the Roaring Twenties came to an end, the stock market crashed, and the Great Depression began. If people couldn’t spend freely, they could still behave and move freely. The period was characterized by belligerence, sudden changes, and the dissemination of new ideas. There was a surge in revolutionary thought, a push for individual expression and personal freedom, and the desire for new beginnings. Humanity was poised to reinvent itself, with major revisions in understanding personal identity and relationships.
This period saw the rise of influential leaders like Adolf Hitler, Stalin, and Getúlio Vargas, each with their distinct ideologies. In keeping with Aries’s association with heads, there were rapid advancements in fields like psychology and brain research, and colossal sculptures of four presidents’ heads were chiseled into Mount Rushmore.
Notable events of that period when Uranus was in Aries include the following:
First Nonstop Flight from Europe to North America: German pilot Hermann Köhl, Irish aviator James Fitzmaurice, and Baron Ehrenfried Günther Freiherr von Hünefeld completed the first transatlantic flight from Europe to North America (1928).
First Olympic Flame Lighting: The 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam introduced the lighting of the Olympic flame, a tradition that continues today.
Edwin Boring: Published “A History of Experimental Psychology,” which became a seminal work in the history of psychology, providing a comprehensive overview of the field up to that point.
Anna Freud: Published her first book, expanding on her father Sigmund Freud’s ideas in the treatment of children, marking a significant step in the development of child psychology.
Jean Piaget: Published “Judgment and Reasoning in the Child,” which contributed to the understanding of cognitive development in children.
Edwards v. Canada (Attorney General): On October 18, 1929 the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the United Kingdom ruled that Canadian women are “persons” under the British North America Acts, making them eligible for appointment to the Senate of Canada.
Women’s Roles: Women’s fashion and social roles began to change in 1929. The flapper, a liberated and fashionable young woman, emerged as a symbol of the new social norms. Flappers were known for their short hair, lipstick, and enjoyment of [taboo] activities like dancing, smoking, and drinking in jazz clubs.
Betty Boop Debut: The character Betty Boop made her debut in the cartoon “Dizzy Dishes” in August 1930. She was designed by Grim Natwick and became a popular cultural icon of the 1930s.
Women’s Rights: The 1930s continued the progress of women’s rights that began in the 1920s. Women gained the right to vote in South Africa (1930, for whites only), Brazil (1933), and Cuba (1933). However, women’s political progress slowed in the U.S. as they began voting similarly to men based on class, regional, and ethnic loyalties rather than gender. Despite this, Nellie Ross became the first woman elected governor of a state (Wyoming) in 1924.
First Global Aircraft Circumnavigation: Pioneering aviators Wiley Post and Harold Gatty became the first people to circumnavigate the globe in a single-engined monoplane aircraft, completing their historic journey in a record 8 days and 16 hours (1931).
Amelia Earhart’s Transatlantic Solo Flight: On May 20-21, 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, covering approximately 2,026 miles in 14 hours and 56 minutes. This achievement not only solidified her status as a pioneering aviator but also advanced women’s representation in aviation.
US Elects First Female Senator: On January 12, 1932, Hattie Wyatt Caraway was elected as the first female senator in the United States, representing Arkansas.
Journal of Personality: The first personality psychology research periodical, originally titled “Character and Personality,” was founded.
Wilhelm Reich: Published “Character Analysis” and “The Mass Psychology of Fascism,” which explored the psychological aspects of character and the social dynamics of fascism.
Ruth Winifred Howard: Became the first African American woman to earn a PhD in psychology, marking an important milestone in diversity within the field.
First Female US Mint Director: On April 28, 1933, the United States Senate approved Nellie Tayloe Ross as the director of the United States Mint, marking a significant milestone for women in government leadership roles. Ross was not only the first woman to serve in this position but also a pioneering figure in breaking gender barriers in federal administrative roles during the early 20th century.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial Dedication: On March 3, 1933, Mount Rushmore National Memorial was dedicated, marking the beginning of a monumental project that would carve the faces of four U.S. presidents into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
Prohibition Repeal: The 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on December 5, 1933, ending the era of Prohibition and allowing the legal production and sale of alcohol. This event marked a significant shift in American social and economic policies.
2011-2018: Uranus entered Aries again in March 2011 and remained there until April 2018, bringing about another period marked by assertiveness, volatility, and originality.
Like the previous transit of Uranus through Aries, this one was also characterized by a focus on individuality and self-expression, leading to sudden significant social and technological changes. It coincided with the Arab Spring uprisings, which sought freedom and democracy in the Middle East.
Additionally, this period saw advancements in technology and communication, such as the rise of social media and new forms of video technology. People were encouraged to break away from old models and embrace new ways of thinking, particularly in terms of personal identity.
Here are some key points about developments during this period:
There was a shift from the dreaminess of Pisces to more direct and action-oriented changes, which sometimes lacked foresight.
The energy of Uranus in Aries promoted individualization and new ways of thinking, which often resulted in bold and sometimes erratic actions.
Uranus in Aries also coincided with the build-up of combative ideals and militaristic armament.
The period saw the rise of influential leaders who were plain thinkers and focused on drastic changes from the status quo, such as Donald Trump in the United States.
On a personal level, individuals may have felt a strong need to express their individuality and break away from societal expectations.
The transit of Uranus in Aries encouraged people to be more proactive and spontaneous, tearing down old structures to make way for new ideas and innovations.
Both of these Uranus in Aries periods were noted for their transformative and unpredictable nature, often leading to significant societal changes and individual breakthroughs. They were marked by a collective sense of revolution and a desire for freedom and originality, sometimes at the expense of long-term consequences.

Humanitarian principles inspire advances in business and the economy, such as the use of new materials or modern electronic techniques in production and accounting. We can get new things, produced in new ways.
When Uranus was last in Taurus, from 1934 to 1942, there were dramatic shifts in the ways people worked, behaved, and organized themselves to meet their basic needs. The era was marked by financial instability and significant social changes. Several significant events occurred:
The Great Depression, which began with the Wall Street crash of 1929, was in full swing, and the economic crisis continued to affect the world.
The world was on the brink of World War II, with notable events including the Spanish Civil War (1936), Japan’s invasion of China (1937), and the Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland (1939). The outbreak of World War II itself happened in 1939.
The Dust Bowl famine occurred due to unsustainable farming practices, leading to a climate crisis that displaced millions.
Roosevelt implemented the Social Security Act and other New Deal programs, which mandated societal support for those outside the capitalist-worker system, such as the elderly, the very young, and the differently abled.
There was a shift in the relationship to money, with rationing becoming the norm for most people.
The Dig For Victory campaign was initiated in the UK, encouraging citizens to cultivate every spare inch of land, and gardening became part of the curriculum in schools.
Roosevelt introduced legislation to help farmers affected by droughts and dust storms.
The current Uranus in Taurus period (2018-2026) has brought similar themes of disruption and innovation in financial and material realms. As traditional values and priorities are reevaluated, new business ideas and innovative approaches to production and money management emerge. As of this writing (February 2025) the changes continue to be erratic and unpredictable.
During this time, Uranus’s apparent forward and backward motion through Taurus due to its retrogradation create specific sub-periods during which tentative developments in this area are sorted out:
May 15, 2018 - November 6, 2018
March 6, 2019 - July 7, 2025
November 7, 2025 - April 25, 2026
Uranus in Gemini:
Connection Magic
When Uranus is in Gemini, thinking breaks free of past patterns and picks up speed and ingenuity. People become better connected, and new social contacts facilitate exposure to new, fast-spreading ideas. These periods bring new concepts in science, literature, education, electronics, transportation, and especially communications media. Here are two of the early ones:
1439-1446: During this period, significant advancements in communication and technology occurred, such as the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg, which revolutionized the dissemination of information.
1690-1697: This era saw contributions from notable figures like Isaac Newton and John Locke, who made significant advancements in science and philosophy, respectively.
The last transit of Uranus through Gemini (1941-1948) saw a plethora of significant advancements in technology that changed the world dramatically.
One of the most notable developments in communication technology was the introduction of the first public telephone, specifically the Rotary model, which became widely popular. This innovation greatly changed how people communicated, making telephone usage more accessible and efficient.
Additionally, the 1940s saw the establishment of the Bureau of Applied Social Research at Columbia University by Paul F. Lazarsfeld. This bureau was a continuation of the Rockefeller Foundation-funded Radio Project and played a crucial role in defining the discipline of communication studies through extensive research and publications.
During this period, universities like the University of Chicago also became important centers for communication studies, hosting several committees and commissions focused on communications. These institutions educated communication scholars and contributed to the development of the field.
The advent of television in the 1940s was marked by significant developments and challenges. Before World War II, the first practical television sets were demonstrated and sold to the public at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. However, when the war began, all commercial production of television equipment was banned, and resources were redirected to war efforts. After the war, television production resumed and rapidly expanded.
In 1945, television was still a novelty for a few thousand wealthy Americans, with only about 7,000 sets in use across the country. Regular broadcasts began in 1946, and by 1947, President Harry Truman’s state of the union address and the baseball World Series were televised. In 1948, CBS and NBC networks started 15-minute nightly newscasts. By 1949, the price of TV sets had dropped, and Americans were buying 100,000 sets every week. The television industry’s rapid growth in the 1940s laid the foundation for its dominance in the 1950s and beyond.
The 1940s also saw significant changes in transportation, driven by the need for efficient and rapid movement of goods and people during World War II.
Roads: The construction of the federal highway system, which began in 1916, gained momentum in the 1940s, with the miles of surfaced roads increasing from 521,000 in 1925 to 1,721,000 in 1945. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 further committed the nation to building a modern, four-lane interstate highway system.
Trucks: The development of better trucks and engines, as well as the introduction of refrigerated trailers, revolutionized the transportation of agricultural products and other goods. This led to a shift away from railroads as the primary mode of transportation for farm products, with trucks offering greater speed and flexibility.
Railroads: Although railroads had dominated the transportation system in America since the completion of the transcontinental line in 1869, their importance began to decline in the 1940s. The rise of trucks and the construction of the interstate highway system reduced the reliance on railroads for transporting goods.
Air Transport: The 1940s also saw significant developments in air transport, with the establishment of companies like American Airlines and United Airlines. The Kelly Airmail Act of 1925 had provided private airlines with the opportunity to function as mail carriers, contributing to the growth of the air transportation industry.
Local Transportation: At the local level, the 1940s saw the introduction of bus systems, such as the Jones Transportation Company in San Luis Obispo, and the expansion of taxi services, including an all-girl taxicab business. These changes transformed the local transportation landscape, providing new options for people to move around.
Overall, the transit of Uranus through Gemini in the 1940s marked a pivotal era in the evolution of communication technologies and academic study, laying the groundwork for future advancements in the field.

Uranus in Aquarius:
Humanitarian Magic
The transit of Uranus is particularly impactful in Aquarius, the sign it rules, which amplifies its tendency to bring about cultural change and upheaval. It’s known for gathering dissimilar people into independent and radical organizations and social movements. Reflecting the themes of Aquarius and the revolutionary nature of Uranus, these periods are characterized by a focus on humanitarian ideals, progressive social change, and technological advancements in general.
Uranus was in Aquarius during two distinct periods in the 20th and 21st centuries. The first period occurred from February 1912 until January 1920. It was a time of significant social and political upheaval, during which the following notable events and trends were observed:

The rise of the Internet, mobile phones, and the accessibility of computers to the general public marked a significant shift in how people interacted and accessed information. Additionally, the discovery of stem cells in the late 1990s opened up new possibilities in medical research and treatment.
Uranus in Pisces:
Mystical Magic
In Pisces, Uranus sparks psychic ability, encouraging individuals to explore their inner worlds and connect with higher spiritual concepts. Many seek liberation from the mental and emotional influence of the past, aspiring to a higher spiritual identity. Religious leanings are colored by mysticism (meditation, Eastern philosophies, yoga, etc.), and ideas are often received through intuition & dreams. This is a time of idealism, sensitivity, and sacrifice for others, all with a sense of humanitarianism and logic.
Taken to extremes, Uranus in Pisces can produce impractical idealism, deceptiveness, avoidance of facing unpleasant situations, and unreliability.
Historically, the most notable periods of Uranus’s transit through Pisces were from 1919 to 1927 and from 2003 to 2011.
1919 to 1927: This period was during the aftermath of World War I and the beginning of the Roaring Twenties. It was a time of awakening intuition, imagination, fantasy, mysticism, and radical changes in beliefs, religion, and morals. People experienced a blend of rebelliousness, scientific knowledge, eccentricity, and innovation, combined with the emotional and empathetic nature of Pisces. This combination led to a strong sense of breaking free from past influences and a deeper understanding of how the universe behaves naturally.
There were sudden crises in great institutions, especially of the religious kind, and a heightened interest in spirituality and the occult. A trend away from traditional organized religion attracted worshipers to the less dogmatic Universalist churches. Many sought new ways to attenuate their pain and find meaning through spiritual and occult practices. Some visited mediums for reassurance of life after death. Others wanting personal experience made their own independent investigations, reading books by psychic authors and experimenting with unconventional spiritual practices such as astrology, divination with cards and other devices, and sometimes — dangerous in my opinion — attempts to contact spirits via ouija boards. Along with a lot of escapist nonsense came some amazing and inspirational spiritual insights.
Notable events of the period include Einstein’s first visit to the United States and lectures on relativity, which Uranus’s influence in Pisces helped bring to the forefront of public awareness. The era included the Great Experiment of prohibiting alcohol and the split between the moralistic and the wild Roaring Twenties.
2003 to 2011: This more recent period saw a continuation of the themes of innovation and spiritual awakening. It was a time when discussions about alternative mental and spiritual healing became more prominent and less taboo. The period also saw a rise in interest in the occult and psychic phenomena.
During these periods, Uranus and Neptune, the planet ruling Pisces, were in mutual reception, meaning Uranus was in Pisces and Neptune was in Aquarius.
